Have you ever wondered what makes a church, community, or organisation flourish? The existence of a sincere connection in a follower-leader relationship is indispensable in fulfilling the mission, vision, and goals of the church.

The Bible guides sincere follower-leader relationships with examples. Therefore, this session explores biblical foundations for a sincere follower-leader relationship.

Biblical instructions for a sincere follower-leader relationship

The Bible is the manual for every Christian faith and practice. It gives instructions on what should characterise the relationship between followers and how they should conduct themselves in their relationship with each other. Some of the guidelines are as follows:

Loving each other sincerely

In Romans 12: 9-10, Paul encourages believers to love sincerely, showing genuine affection and honour towards one another. He said, ‘Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.’

Serving each other sincerely

Slaves and masters are a prototype of the follower-leader relationship. In Ephesians 6: 5-9 and Colossians 3:22-25, Paul instructs slaves and masters (leaders and followers) to serve each other sincerely and recognise their mutual accountability to God. He warned against eye service and encouraged complete devotion.

Demonstrating wisdom characterised by sincerity

Effectiveness in leadership and followership requires wisdom. James 3: 16-17 compares earthly and heavenly wisdom and then identifies sincerity as one of the latter’s essential qualities alongside purity, peace, and mercy.

Apostle James said, ‘But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere (James 3:17)

Holding on to sincere faith as the foundation for life (1 Timothy 1:5)

Sincere faith is the springboard for biblical love. It is characterised by trust and commitment to one’s beliefs and values. It involves embracing wholeheartedly and living out one’s faith with honesty, integrity, and conviction. Sincere faith is a catalyst for the leadership-followership journey to attain church/organisational success.

Being trustworthy

God hates lying tongues and encourages trustworthiness through. Leaders and followers must be truthful and honest in their relationship. The author of Proverbs said, ‘The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.’ (Proverbs 12:22)

In Hebrews 13:17, Disciples of Christ are instructed to have confidence in their leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over us as those who must give an account. When followers submit to their leaders, they demonstrate that they value their leader’s role as a shepherd. Read 1 Peter 5: 2-3)

Biblical Models of Sincere Follower-Leader Relationship

This section will examine some biblical follower-leader relationships rooted in sincerity. They are as follows:

Joshua and Moses

The story of Moses’ mentorship of Joshua and the latter’s succession to leadership demonstrates a sincere follower-leader relationship worthy of emulation. Joshua exemplified the following characteristics of sincere followership under Moses’ leadership:

Obedience and submission

Joshua demonstrated unwavering obedience to Moses, following his instructions faithfully throughout their journey in the wilderness. For example, when Moses chose Joshua to lead the Israelites’ army in battle against the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8-16), he obeyed Moses without hesitation.

He also followed Moses’ instruction when he sent spies to explore the land of Canaan. Joshua’s obedience and submission to Moses were sincere towards fulfilling God’s commands.

Trust and Loyalty

Joshua exhibited trust and loyalty to Moses, standing by him, even in challenging circumstances (Exodus 17:8-13; Numbers 11:26-29). He served as Moses’ faithful assistant and companion throughout the wilderness journey.

He accompanied Moses to Mount Sinai, where he received the Ten Commandments from God (Exodus 24:13). Joshua’s consistent support for Moses indicates his sincere and unwavering loyalty to Moses’ leadership, even in difficult times.

Courage and Determination

Joshua displayed courage and determination as he embraced the daunting task of learning the Israelites to the Promised Land, after Moses’ death.

Despite the challenges and opposition he faced, such as crossing the Jordan River and conquering the fortified city of Jericho, Joshua remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to God’s promises (Joshua 6:1-21; Joshua 3:7-17).

Joshua’s courage and determination in leading the Israelites into the Promised Land were a sincere expression of his faith and commitment to God’s promises.

Similarly, Moses modelled sincere leadership by mentoring and transitioning leadership to Joshua. Below are the qualities of the sincere leadership roles he manifested.

Humility and Servanthood

Moses was an epitome of humility and servanthood in his leadership style. He accepted the responsibility of leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, despite his initial refusal and shortcomings (Exodus 3-4). He interceded on the people’s behalf and pleaded with God to forgive their sins and spare them from destruction.

Moses’ humility and servanthood were sincere reflections of his genuine concern for the welfare of the Israelites. He did not seek glory or recognition for himself but humbly accepted the role of serving God and leading His people.

Integrity and Transparency

Moses led the Israelites with integrity and consistently communicated God’s laws and commandments to them by holding himself accountable to the same standards (Exodus 20:1-17; Leviticus 19:1-18; Deuteronomy 4:1-9).

He did not hesitate to confront wrongdoings or injustice within the community, such as when he intervened to settle disputes among the people (Exodus 18). He did not hide his shortcomings or failures but openly acknowledged them, demonstrating sincerity in his leadership.

Vision and Faith

Moses envisioned God’s Promises for the Israelites and remained steadfast in faith. Despite his struggles and shortcomings, he was faithful to God’s calling and successfully led the Israelites to fulfil God’s covenant.

He constantly encouraged the people of Israel to trust in God’s promises and to remain steadfast in their faith in Him. His sincerity in following God’s guidance was evident throughout his leadership.

Moses’s membership and training of Joshua is a display of a sincere leader-follower relationship characterised by investment and empowerment. Moses intentionally invested in the development and growth of his successor, Joshua (Numbers 27:18-23).

He showed genuine care and concern for Joshua’s success and well-being as a leader. Through many years of observation and learning from Moses’ leadership style, Joshua gained valuable knowledge and skills that prepared him for leadership (Exodus 24:13).

Paul mentored and discipled Timothy. He invested time in Timothy’s spiritual development and growth through guidance, encouragement, and instruction. He also equipped him for ministry and leadership roles (1 Timothy 1:2; 2 Timothy 1:2-5; 2 Timothy 2:1-2)

Paul’s discipleship efforts on Timothy were sincere because they were driven by a genuine desire to see Timothy succeed and flourish in his ministry.

His life served as a sincere testimony to the transformative power of Christ. The Twelve Disciples and Jesus

Jesus called His disciples at the beginning of His ministry to follow Him. He intended to build a leader-follower relationship with them. Although the disciples exhibited human frailties, they are worthy models of sincere followers. They displayed the following characteristics of sincere followership:

Commitment and loyalty

The disciples left their families and professions to follow Jesus. This is a sign of sincere commitment to learn and fulfil Jesus’ mission. Amid challenges and uncertainties, they remained faithfully committed and loyal to Jesus.

With a few understandable exceptions, they supported Him throughout His ministry. At one time, Peter declared their loyalty, saying ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.’ (John 6:68; Mark 10:28).

Openness to Learning

The disciples were open to Jesus’ teachings, despite their backgrounds and beliefs. Their willingness to ask questions and seek clarification highlights a sincere desire to understand Jesus’ teachings (John 14:8). They were ready to receive His teachings with open minds and hearts because of their humility and desire to grow.

Obedience and submission

These disciples consistently obeyed Jesus’ teachings and followed His instructions. Their genuine desire to follow and learn from Him made obedience and submission easy. Their obedience and submission were born out of a sincere commitment to Jesus as their Lord and teacher.

Jesus, on the other hand, exhibited some characteristics of a sincere leader worthy of emulation. They are as follows”

Truthfulness

Jesus often spoke openly and honestly to His disciples, even when it was difficult. He did not hide His emotions or intentions. For instance, in John 11:33-35, Jesus openly expressed His sorrow and wept at the death of His friend Lazarus to show his emotions.

He shared His intention to go to Jerusalem to suffer and die, despite Peter’s objection. He also openly rebuked those buying and selling in the temple.

Other characteristics exhibited by Jesus Christ are humility and service (John 13:4-17); Investment in Spiritual growth (Mark 4: 35-41), and Open commitment (Matthew 13:34-35). Read the similar post on this page.
