How God Delivers from Illness: 11 Proven Ways

Almost all the Bible Books, especially the Old Testament, explain the notion of God’s sovereignity which is concerned with illness and health. This embodies the belief that God has supreme authority and sovereignty over every aspect of existence, comprising human health and disease.

This notion is explained in the biblical perspective on God’s sovereignty in the domains, emphasising key biblical references and theological insights.

1. God’s Sovereignty and Human Health

In Exodus 15:26, God declares to the Israelites and affirms that God has power and He is the source of life and health. “If you will listen attentively to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight.

It is believed that if you obey God’s commands and all His decrees, you will not be afflicted with any of the diseases that were brought upon the Egyptians, because God is the LORD who heals you. This Scriptural verse emphasises God’s role as the healer and guardian of His people, depending on their obedience and faithfulness.

2. Illness as a Way to Divine Purpose

In the Bible, an illustration where illness serves as a divine purpose is highlighted. John 9:1-3 explained how Jesus met a man who was blind from birth. His disciples asked, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, for him to be born blind?’

Jesus replies, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it happened for the works of God to be manifested through him.’ Here, illness is portrayed as an opportunity to glorify God.  It also challenges us that all sickness has a consequence of personal sin.

3. God’s Sovereignty in Suffering

The Book of Job deeply examined God’s sovereignty amid suffering. God testified that he was a righteous man; he endured serious physical and emotional pain. Despite his trials, he recognises God’s supreme authority.

Then he said, ‘The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. This can be found in Job 1:21. Job’s story demonstrates that though human insight into suffering is restricted, God still surpasses human reasoning.

4. Healing and Divine Will

A lot of books in the New Testament record several occasions of Jesus healing the ill, demonstrating His dominion over disease and ailment. The book of Matthew 8:16-17 says, ‘When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.

The Bible verses were a fulfilment of what the Prophet Isaiah had said: ‘He took on our infirmities and carried our diseases.’ The miracles of Jesus Christ authenticate Jesus’ divine authority and compassion, in connection with God’s sovereignty.

6. Prayer and Trust in God’s Plan

Every Christian is expected to pray for healing as they trust in God’s sovereign design. James 5:14-15 gives advice, ‘Is any of you sick?’ This explains that the sick should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick; the Lord will raise him.’ This Bible emphasise the importance of faith and collective prayer, affirming that lasting healing is in God’s control.

5. The Enigma of Divine Providence

Though the Bible looks at God’s control over health and illness at another angle, it recognises the enigma of His methods at the same time. The Book of Isaiah 55:8-9 says, ‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.

The Books of Rom. 13:1; Heb. 1:3; Eph. 1:11; Ps. 135:6; Prov. 16:33 explicitly declares all aspects of existence and holds sovereignty over them. This notion reassures God’s positions and leads to the new job you have long desired, or allows you to meet your partner. It is easy to recognise God’s hand at work for our benefit in such circumstances.

7. Divine Provision

There are diseases and illnesses; how will you handle them spiritually? Those illnesses are as follows: diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or cancer. What about enduring months or years of depression or pain with minimal relief? At times, it may become more challenging to see God’s manifestation in our welfare.

During difficult times, we may be tempted to separate God’s sovereignty from our suffering, attributing these experiences to sin, random chance, or the devil—but is this a complete and accurate response?

8. The use of Scriptures

In the Scriptures, we witness God working through the brokenness of our world to manifest significant pain and suffering for His glory and the benefit of His people, encompassing the widespread plagues (Ex. 7:17, 8:2, 8:21, 11:1, 14:14; Jos. 24:6-7) as well as the personal narrative of Job losing all that he cherished (Jb. 1:13-19).

We observe God afflicting Paul with a thorn in his flesh, which he mourns but does not curse God for (2 Cor. 12:7-10). Even the suffering endured by our Lord Jesus Christ was decreed by God (Isa. 53; Acts 2:22-24).

Jesus implored the Father to remove the cup of suffering from Him (Matthew 26:39,42), yet when it was God’s will for the Son to drink from the cup, Jesus willingly submitted and, like a lamb, was led to slaughter.

If care is not taken during reading certain passages, it may occur as if God and Satan are involved in a cosmic struggle of good versus evil. However, we learn from Job that Satan cannot act without God’s consent (Jb. 1:12; Job 2:6), which should provide believers with immense comfort.

The one who roams about seeking your destruction (1 Pet. 5:8) is only a pledge in the hands of God. God loves you and have interest in you. It is good to identify that though God ordains and uses suffering, He does not perpetuate sin or evil. We inherited sin and suffering in the World through Adam and Eve.

9. Relationship with God

Mysterious existence occurs in the relationship between God’s sovereignty and the presence of evil. Therefore, we declare God’s sovereignty, grieve and dislike evil, as opposed to our good God.

Job provides us with a good example of how to trust the God of sovereignty to bring about what is best for us in our pain and suffering. When we read passages that portray Satan executing evil actions, believers should hold onto the hope that our God is sovereign. While we acknowledge God’s sovereignty, we also grieve and detest evil, as it stands in stark contrast to our benevolent God.

Thus, we pose the question, “When God introduces suffering into our lives, how shall we respond?” My personal struggle with chronic illness has been a journey of highs and lows. There have been moments when I found myself in a hospital bed, crying out, “Why? What purpose does this illness serve?”

10. Glorify God

Conversely, there have been instances where I have glorified God for drawing me nearer to Him through my suffering. Although this was not the path I would have chosen, in His boundless wisdom, He understood that my illness would ultimately lead me closer to Him and would be eternally worthwhile.

Some individuals assert that we should not question God and His methods, and to some degree, this is accurate. We ought not to approach God in an accusatory manner, as if we possess a superior plan.

Nevertheless, when we approach Him in a state of brokenness and fatigue, bearing questions for which we lack answers, God is neither intimidated nor exasperated by our inquiries. He takes joy in our coming to Him and placing our burdens at His feet.

There are numerous places we can turn to seek solace or to understand the reasons behind the suffering we encounter in life. At times, we impose guilt upon ourselves or fall prey to the misconception that God is punishing us for our sins.

11. Corrections of Negative Mindset

In the book of John 9, Jesus, however, corrects the mindset and state, ‘It was not that this man sinned, nor his parents, but that the works of God might be revealed in him.’ Everyone must understand that the source of peace from suffering and from chronic disease is the sovereign God.

Your pain with cystic fibrosis, a hereditary lung condition, has resulted in many days filled with agony.  If you confront moments when doctors delivered distressing news, treatments that have not given the expected results, painful tests and procedures, the emotional burden of knowing the average life expectancy for people with cystic fibrosis will be under 40 years.

For example, a man endures seven serious weeks in the hospital, during which your lungs, affected by disease failed. He was placed on life support to assist his breathing for 16 days. In His sovereignty, God granted him a new lease on life.

I underwent a double-lung transplant when I was literally hours away from death. Although I would never have chosen to experience that ordeal, I found comfort in the knowledge that God is in control and that He is inherently good. He loves me, and He always acts in my best interest.

Conclusion

As Christians, our ultimate hope and solace can solely be found in Jesus, along with what Paul describes as the “eternal weight of glory” that is being prepared for God’s children as they face suffering.

Do you know that because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, the season of death will come to an end one day, and we shall stand beside our Lord, free from pain, tears, suffering, and disease. Read the similar post on this page.
