Law is instructions given by fathers, mothers, or wise men to their pupils or sons. It can also mean direction, wisdom, or commandment. Law is an official collection of customary rules approved by the society or community as binding on any individual in that society.
Introduction
The law regulates relations between individuals and the state. The court of law punishes anyone who breaks the law. Law is made by man for peace and good behaviour of the people in society. Law as commandments are instructions that in most cases do not stem from human beings but from God.
Grace means mercy, kindness, loving-kindness, or goodness. Grace is favour or divine mercy on the elect. It also means God’s favour is shown to sinners through Jesus Christ. Grace can also mean an acknowledgement of God’s gifts Rom.6:17 Grace means God’s undeserved favour on sinners through Jesus Christ. Faith is the human response to divine grace. Law and grace have similarities and differences.
The Effects of Law and Grace (Romans 4:13-25; 5:18-21)
- In his Epistle to the Romans, Paul discusses the purpose and the ministry of the law.
- The law points to God’s standards and people’s inability to live up to them.
- The law is not a way of getting justification, but was given so that through it will become conscious of our sins.
- But God’s righteousness is revealed apart from the law, and the prophets testify to this fact.
- God provided righteousness because all who believed are justified freely by his grace, or merited or unmerited favour.
- The basis of this redemption comes from Christ. Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement(to demonstrate his justice).
- Paul said that it was not through law that Abraham and his descendants received the promise that he would inherit the world.
Section 1
- So believers of all ages are Abraham’s seeds for they enjoy the same spiritual blessing which he enjoyed.
- Paul explained that if Jews could become heirs by obeying the law, then faith has no value and the promise is useless.
- Abraham is the father of us in the sight of the Lord.
- Paul shows the demands of the law and the curse attached to failure to keep any of it. Since everybody fails at some point, all are under the curse.
- There is hope for all those who have broken the law and are under its curse: That hope is not in man, but in Christ who redeemed us.
- The law could not give the Holy Spirit, and could not bring justification, but brought a curse. So law is given for transgression – a means for checking sin. The law was temporary until the seed came, after which it was no longer needed.
Section 2
- The law was inferior God made promises to Abraham directly but established the law by mediators. It was God who gave both the law and the promise but for different purposes.
- The law is an addition to make men know God, but in practice failed to achieve this goal.
- The law was good for it established discipline until Christ came to free men from this discipline.
- Before Christ came, the law was good, but now baptized in Christ, and has put on his family likeness.
- Now no difference between Jew and Greek slaves. Male and female, all are in Jesus Christ.
- Law is good for its purpose. It is made to guide behaviour. It is our custodian that leads us to Christ. A man’s grace is honest and peaceful. Those who are baptized in Jesus receive the grace of God.
Differences between law and grace
- Law makes us sin while grace liberates us from sin.
- Law is man-made while grace is divine.
- Law and grace are in conflicting directions.
A promise made by God Abraham that his descendant would inherit the world was not because of his hence to the law but as a result of his faith in God. The knowledge of the law leads to punishment for without the law, there would be no transgression. Therefore, the promise to Abraham’s heirs depends on faith. The promise of grace is not only for Abraham’s descendants but by the father of the faithful because his faith in God was fully illustrated when he believed God’s promise that he would be the father of all nations.
Despite the old age of both Abraham and Sarah and her bareness, Abraham did not doubt God’s promise but held firmly to the faith he had in God.
Due to one man’s disobedience, many became sinned and condemned because of Adam’s sin. But through God’s grace and righteousness man has been saved. Law came to increase the puss, but where increased, grace abounded all the more grace sin also might rule through righteousness small life through Jesus Christ.
