Why do so many men struggle with sexual temptation, even in the church? What can we do to help others and ourselves in this struggle over sexual attraction? Why is this? Why is sexual temptation a bigger problem for men than for women?
1. Ways to Overcome Sexual Temptations
We Are Out of Touch with Wisdom -Proverbs 5:1-2, 9-14.
The Bible warns of strangers draining our resources – think about how much time and money men spend on sex. We are told we will live with great regret and could face complete public ruin. We lose sight of reality 5:3-4The forbidden woman offers us something which stirs up a part of our soul. Men fall for the mirage instead of the reality.
We walk too close to the edge -Proverbs 5:8, 6: 27-28
Men think they are above wisdom; they convince themselves they can get close to the edge without falling over the cliff. It’s the little moments of flirting that spark sexual flames
We stop pursuing our wife – Proverbs5:15-19
Life gets busy, and relationships work. The longer you are married, the easier it is to fall into routines or frustrations in your marriage. When a man’s energy is no longer focused on pursuing his wife, it will often become focused on dating someone else.
We refuse discipline in our life -Proverbs 5:22-23
It takes discipline to fight against sexual temptations. A lack of discipline will result in becoming trapped and entangled. Some of the most influential leaders have been able to create fields in their organisations but have failed to develop a lot in their personal lives.
Sexual temptation is all around us, and we are encouraged to give in and experiment. However, the Bible is clear on reserving sex for marriage and keeping ourselves pure. The fallout of casual sex and infidelity is significant and ruins relationships. So from a Christian perspective, how can we overcome sexual temptation?
Share your struggles with someone 5:14
Sharing problems with temptation is difficult, no doubt, but having those tough conversations is the best way to grow and move forward. Men who create an open dialogue with their spouse about temptation are far better off overall because they can work on the problem together.
Invest in Christ-centered Relationships -Proverbs 27: 17
Nothing sets men up for failure more than being unable to create meaningful, authentic, and deep relationships with others. Make real connections with men whose life focus is to make heaven.
Improve Your Mental Health -Samuel 11:1—5
The job’s stress and consistent loneliness give the man a need to seek out some relief. Men who don’t focus on their mental health will only be tempted by sexual sin.
Strengthen Your Spiritual Life -James 4:7
When a man’s spiritual side lacks depth, much like their mental health, it can deteriorate quickly and cause serious problems. A lack of deep prayer and few encounters with God make a man’s vulnerability to temptation sky-high.
Understand Your Risk Zones-1 Cor.10:12
We cannot fight an enemy that we do not know. Each one of us has a different weakness. Knowing what those are and where the risk zones are is essential. Then stay away from those risk zones.
Stop Feeding Your Senses – Job 31:1
Sexual desires are rooted in what you have been feeding your five senses. Your eyes, ears, smell, taste, and touch. If you have been playing and feeding these senses sensually, it will cause you to stir other fantasies that will lead you down this dwindling path into sin.
Create Boundaries-1 Cor.6:18
Boundaries are things you build around yourself to protect from emotional sparks that may lead to sexual sin: travelling alone with a female.
Uphold Your Marriage – Proverbs 5:15-19,1 Cor.7:3-4
Sex within marriage is fantastic. However, you must learn to uphold your marriage by investing in your relationship with your wife. Go the extra mile to keep her sweet, romantic, and alluring. Your wife can be whatever you desire outside if you take the time to invest in her through patience and prayer.
Don’t give those sexual thoughts free admission in your mind. You can’t always avoid sexual stimulation, but when an idea comes into your mind, you can choose not to give it free admission and entertain it as a guest. God has blessed our minds with the power to switch off something we don’t desire to dwell on. Simply switch topics.
