Thunder and lightning have been observed to occur simultaneously. Hence whenever there is a flash of lightning in the atmosphere.
Many people will take precautions to protect themselves from the intended thunder some would run under a shelter, close their ears, stand still at a safe comer and so on, All these show that thunder can be a dangerous natural occurrence,
1. Rainstorm
A rainstorm is a strong wind with a heavy downpour, which is sometimes accompanied by snow, hail, thunder, lightning, sand, or dust.
Causes of Rainstorms
When the atmospheric temperature rises, more water vapour from the ocean evaporates into the atmosphere with some energy. This later results in an intense downpour, which is sometimes accompanied by a strong wind, thunder, lightning, and the like.
Effects of Rainstorms
Rainstorms can result in several hazards such as flooding, damage to buildings and infrastructure, loss of crops, loss of animals, landslides, and disruption of transportation and communication.
According to Oluwaseun Akingboye in The Guardian newspaper on March 7, 2022, “Rainstorm destroys properties worth millions in Akure, Ondo State.”The rainstorm destroyed a family’s only car; it moved the roof of their building to the top of other buildings.
It can also threaten human lives. It was also reported that the rainstorm killed six people destroyed 166 households, and flooded as a result of a rainstorm in Kano State; Six people were killed in Yobe by a rainstorm and One of the houses was destroyed in Yobe.
Response to Rainstorms and Prevention of the Effects of Rainstorms
- Stay indoors during rainstorms.
- Avoid metal and electrical objects during rainstorms.
- Stay away from tall objects during rainstorms.
- Put on protective clothes.

2. Thunder and Lightning
Lightning is described as flashes of light seen in the sky when there is a discharge of atmospheric electricity in the clouds or between clouds and the ground, usually occurring during a thunderstorm(Microsoft Encarta Dictionaries 2009). While thunder is a loud noise usually heard after the lightning.
Lightning and thunder occur when warm moist air collides with cooler air violently and rapidly. This action produces an electrical spark, which is seen as lightning, and an acoustic effect or sound known as thunder.
There are three thunderstorms namely: single-cell, multi-cell, and super-cell.Supercell thunderstorms are the strongest and most severe. It is usually a short-lived weather disturbance.
Safety Caution in Responding to Thunder and Lightning
The following safety tips are given as what to do during and after a thunder and lightning:
- Take safety action immediately upon hearing thunder.
- Avoid touching electrical appliances such as fridges, freezers, electric ovens, and the like, during thunderstorms.
- Close and stay away from windows and doors.
- Do not bathe or shower, as plumbing conducts electricity.
- If driving, safely exit the road, turn on hazard lights, and park (let your parents know this).
- Remain inside the vehicle and avoid touching metallic objects.
- Do not shelter under tall or isolated trees during thunderstorms.
- Be alert for natural signs of an approaching storm.
- Monitor forecasts and weather conditions to know whether thunderstorms are likely to occur in your area.
- Avoid playing in the rain.
- Always pray to God to protect against thunderstorms.
