A witness is a person who sees the occurrences of an event and can describe it to others. In the context of this study, a witness is someone who knows Jesus, His power, and graciousness. Therefore, as Christians, we must be Jesus’ witnesses for the following reasons:
- It is a command: Read Mark 16:15.
- It rescues lost souls: Read John 14:6.
- It meets the needs of others: Many people have one need or the other, and they are yawning for someone who will lead them to where the need will be met.
- It is for spiritual growth: We will experience the tremendous privilege and honour of representing Jesus in the world (2 Corinthians 5:20).
God wants you to tell others about Him (Exodus 20:3). He also wants you to love others. The only way to do this is for you to trust and obey Him. Loving God and the people form the art of witnessing. Witness Jesus’ love for others today.
A Confident Witness (Text: 2 Kings 5:1-3)
A confident witness is someone present at the scene of an event and has a strong belief or full assurance of what he or she has seen or heard. For this study, there is a strong belief in one’s experience with God and the ability to defend it or share it with others without fear. Today, we want to learn about the slave girl from Syria who was a confident witness. Be attentive as you learn.
The little maid who was brought as a captive from the land of Israel portrayed many qualities that we can emulate. Notable among these qualities is her confidence. She witnessed her mistress with confidence. However, her confidence was not developed in a day. It must have been fueled by spiritual, parental and personal efforts. In other words, several other
Devotion to God
The slave girl did not put her confidence in herself, man or prophet, but in God. She had a deep understanding of God. For her to have witnessed God with confidence, she must have encountered Him. It further showed the kind of home she came from: a home with strong spiritual and moral training.
Her parents may have given her a strong spiritual foundation while she was with them. It was this that made her faith in the Lord strong. They did not know that they were preparing her for an important mission in a heathen home.
Write them on the door-frames of your houses and your gates.” She released herself totally to her parents’ teachings and instructions and finally to God as her Saviour. She did not know what was ahead of her. She continued to devote herself to God.
Compassion
The young girl was captured from Israel and made a slave in Syria, another place away from her own home. She was not put amongst parents, relatives or friends but in a strange house, performing the duties of a maid. She could have been bitter and resentful because of this downturn.
She could have wished the worst for her mistress and her family, but instead. She had compassion for them. Her compassionate heart contributed to her confidence. The girl saw a need in the family and offered to help.
She witnessed her master with compassion. This is a challenge to yo,u t, oo to use every situation you are in as an opportunity to witness other people’s needs. God might have brought that situation your way for a reason, and that reason may be to help others.
Moral Virtues
The slave girl had a good moral foundation. This can be seen in her character and conduct. She was respectful, polite and humble. She politely told her mistress, “…if only my master would see the prophet who was in Samaria, he would cure him of his leprosy” (2 Kings 5:3).
She demonstrated respect and politeness in the process of witnessing. Furthermore, she was calm even in a strange land. She knew her situation but was not troubled. She related to everyone as if she had met them before. Jesus said, “… in me you will have peace…” (John 16:33).
This further portrayed her as a confident witness. Her confidence could have made her talk too much. Likewise, her situation could have made her speak with anger, but her virtues made her stand out. Indeed, her confidence was positive and enviable.
To witness to others, you need to imbibe these qualities too. Be respectful in your relationship with both old and young; show politeness while dealing with people and render help to others with humility. Know that it is only God who allows you to do so. Overall, as Christ’s representatives, you are expected to bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit-joy, love, peace, etc. (Galatians 5:22).
Faith
The little slave girl was sure of what God could do. This was faith at work. There are many Christians today who are born again but do not have faith in God that He can do the impossible. If you are genuinely born again, your faith can move mountains (Matthew 17:20).
Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God”. Your confidence in God must manifest through your faith. As you show consistent faith in God, you build your confidence in His word and power. Proverbs 28:1 says, “The righteous shall be as bold as a lion”. The slave girl spoke boldly to her mistress because of the faith she had in God.
She was not afraid of anybody or the consequences of her suggestion because faith was alive in her. Likewise, people must know you as a faith carrier. May the Lord grant you the grace to be bold in declaring His word in Jesus’ name.
Sensitivity
The little slave girl was alert. She was sensitive enough to take advantage of the opportunity to witness to her mistress. She noticed what was right about her master and took it up personally. She was not carried away by her duties or distracted by the stress she went through as a maid. She understood her mandate as light in her mistress’s house. You are also light wherever you find yourself.
Becoming a Confident Witness (Text: 2 Kings 5:1-5)
Introduction: No doubt, the slave girl was not born with the beautiful traits highlighted in the previous lesson. She must have learnt and imbibed them through the help of God, her efforts and her parents’ efforts. In this lesson, was Hall learning the steps to take to become a confident witness like the slave girl?
How to be a Confident Witness
To develop the confidence to witness to others, you must:
Live a Christ-like life
For anyone to talk about someone or something with boldness, you must have met the person or know such a person or thing very well. Therefore, the first step to take to witness Jesus is to know Him and live for Him. Let your life minister Christ to the people around you. Avoid anything that can tarnish your image as a child of God.
Study the Scriptures
The level of your understanding of the Scripture will help you to boldly declare the mind of Christ when witnessing to others. Joshua 1:8 says, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…”
The word of God helps you to build confidence in God. Through it, you will read about the miracles of Jesus when he was on earth. These will help you to tell others that Jesus can save, heal and deliver.
Allow the Holy Spirit
You are not a witness on your own, but you do so with the consciousness that the Holy Spirit dwells in you and will not leave… Matthew 28:20. Christ is not only in you but with you as you proclaim His name. He will make you sensitive to what you say or do at every point in time. He will lead you to witness confidently.
Be prayerful
No one can achieve anything or be a confident witness without prayer. Paul prayed that God would provide an open door for the word (Colossians 4:3). This should be your prayer too. Pray that God will give you the words you need as you share the Gospel with others.
Be observant
Take time to study your environment so that you will know when and how to come in to witness. Be attentive also as you tell others about Christ. When Jesus went to the temple, He did not immediately share the Good News; He listened and asked questions (Luke 2:46). Take note of the needs of people around you. Lead them to Christ.
Be flexible
Do not focus on a particular way to witness, be dynamic as the Holy Spirit leads you. This calls for your sensitivity too and surrendering all to Jesus to take over.
Be bold
This is the last but not the least. You may be born again, prayerful, scripture-grounded, sensitive to needs, but controlled by fear. Fear is the only spirit that silences the Holy Spirit in you. When tempted by fear to remain silent, hold onto Jesus’ promise by faith; the promise of His power. “All power in heaven and earth is given to me” (Matthew 28:18).
Conclusion
Being a confident witness begins with your salvation. Are you saved? Are you born again? Repentance weeps away ungodly characters. God’s expectation is for you to fulfil His purpose of telling others about Jesus. Remember, you cannot give what you do not have. Christ in you will grant you the confidence to witness to others. Let others see Jesus in you. You can read further similar posts on the Bible teaching page of the site.
