Prayer serves as one of the most potent means of communication with God; however, there are times when it may seem as though our prayers are not reaching the heavens.
Effective prayer transcends mere words; it encompasses our hearts, mindset, and the way we approach God. You desire to receive his guidance on who he is, who you are, and the direction in which you are headed.
However, it becomes challenging to hear him when prayer assassins are lurking within the depths of our souls, undermining our every petition and intercession to our heavenly Father. How can we address a deficient prayer life?
To facilitate this, I believe we must first acknowledge some of the habits that contribute to a lacklustre prayer life and consciously strive to combat them. The following list outlines the most prevalent barriers to prayer in a believer’s life and offers strategies for overcoming them.
1. Unconfessed sins
When we allow sin to reside within us, it obstructs the flow and distorts the spiritual channels of communication with the Father. The remedy is straightforward. Dedicate time to request God to reveal where you are deliberately concealing sin in your heart, and then confess and turn away from it. (Psalm 66:18). One of the most significant obstacles to effective prayer is unconfessed sin.
Solution: Initiate your prayer by asking God to examine your heart and disclose any sin. Repent and request His cleansing so that your heart may be pure before Him.
Prayer: Almighty God, I confess my sin, and I ask for forgiveness today in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
2. Absence of Faith
Without faith – a firm assurance – in the nature and might of God, we should not anticipate our prayers being fulfilled. Our faith in God will increase when we invest time in the Word of God.
Our prayers lack the potency to effect change if faith is lacking. James 1:6-7 warns us that anyone who has doubts may not receive anything from God. If we pray without faith, our prayers become unproductive.
Solution: Depend on God’s ability to respond to your prayers, even when the results are not immediately apparent.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, increase my faith and let it work for me to succeed in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
3. Disobedience
If we do not obey the Word of God and what the Lord has commanded us to do, the success and new opportunities on our way are lost. Let us read meditatively. (1 John 3:21-22)
Solution: Everyone who prays and receive quick answer from God must obey His commands and surrender themselves to His Will.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to obey your commands and your will in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
4. Lack of Openness with Others
When we conceal ourselves behind shame, fear, and guilt, we remain fractured. However, when we disclose our sins to another person, God sometimes mysteriously responds to our prayers with healing. (James 5:16)
Solution: Do not hide your sin before God because He sees everything. Confess your sin, and your prayer shall be answered.
Prayer: Oh God, Help to confess my sin so that it shall be well with me from today in the name of Jesus Christ.
5. The Inability to Forgive
When we are unable to forgive others, it serves as a clear indication that we do not fully grasp the forgiveness that God has extended to us. The solution to this obstacle is to forgive – to release others from the obligations they owe us. Forgiveness eliminates the barrier between the other individual and ourselves, as well as between God and ourselves. (Matthew 18:21-22)
Solution: Ensure you forgive all those who offended and those you offend; do not keep malice, and it is necessary to do this before you pray.
Prayer: Jesus, give me grace and help to forgive all those who have offended me and those I have offended in the name of Jesus Christ.
6. The Neglect of Prayer
We do not have because we do not ask. A refusal to pray is a guaranteed method to ensure that we do not receive answers to our prayers. Therefore, we must pray! (James 4:2-3).
Solution: We should be persistent in prayer; a desire to meet God always in prayer will reinforce the closeness between God and us.
Prayer: Eternal Rock of Ages, let me always desire to meet you in prayer from this moment in the name of Jesus Christ.
7. Self-Centred Intentions
According to James 4:3, God may sometimes decline to respond to our prayers due to our selfish intentions. We often seek answers to our prayers not for God’s glory, but for our own benefit. Thus, when we pray, let us request that God purify our intentions so that our prayers align with His desires.
Solution: Our prayer points must always be our own. Stop displaying selfish ambitions when you are praying to God.
Prayer: Lord, teach me to stand in the gap for others in my prayer in the name of Jesus Christ.
8. The Establishment of Idols in Our Lives
Do not establish any idol in your heart. God will grant your request when you hold another god or worldly things in your heart? God wants to scatter our idols and offer devotion and control over our lives. (Ezekiel 14:3).
Solution: Do not hold any gods or idols in your heart when you are praying to Almighty God. You cannot serve two masters.
Prayer: Gracious and powerful God, destroy every idol in my heart today and let my love with you increase in the special name of Jesus Christ.
9. Exhaustion
In Luke 22:45, Jesus discovers His disciples asleep when they ought to have been praying. At times, we are overwhelmed by exhaustion, whether from working excessive hours or depriving ourselves of the essential gift of sleep. A well-rested body can lead to a well-rested heart, one that is ready to engage in prayer.
Solution: Ensure you are strong and pray with concentration during prayer. God wants a serious prayer warrior and those who are ready to pray fervently.
Prayer: My God, increase my strength and energy to pray fervently in the mighty name of Jesus.
10. Unresolved marital conflict
As husbands, when we fail to honour our wives as precious gifts and do not live with them in an understanding manner, we inadvertently obstruct our prayers. Husbands, let us treat our wives with special regard and strive to understand them deeply. (1 Peter 3:7)
Solution: Couples must settle any misunderstandings and conflicts before going to God and praying. If not, their prayer will be hindered either individually or as a family.
Prayer: Eternal God, grant us grace to come to you in peace when we want to pray as a family in the special name of Jesus Christ.
11. Ignoring God’s complete control
At times, God may withhold responses to our requests because we have not fully entrusted our lives to Him. We can find complete rest in Him, for He is good and desires the best for us. (Matthew 26:36-42)
Solution: Make you rely on God completely, so that He can grant your requests. Trust Him for being your Maker.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to completely depend on you in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
12. Stubborn will
God responds to and guides those who allow Him the freedom to search, understand, and test their hearts. (Psalm 139:22-24)
Solution: Always give God freedom to search your heart and do a new thing there.
Prayer: Jesus, do a new thing in my life and make my life radiate all the time in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
13. Unforgiveness
In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus teaches that if we do not forgive others, our Heavenly Father will not forgive us. That means if we hold anything contrary to the Word of God or we hold onto grudges or bitterness, there is no way God can hear us.
Solution: Ensure today to release past grievances and forgive those who have wronged you. Forgiveness liberates you to approach God with a heart that is open and prepared to receive His responses.
Prayer: God, grant me grace to forgive other people in the special name of Jesus Christ.
14. Distractions
One thing we cannot allow in our prayer is distraction. These days, distractions can divert our attention from God. Whether it is the clamour of the world or our own anxious thoughts, distractions can prevent us from genuinely connecting with God.
Solution: Schedule your prayer time in a quiet and silent environment so that distractions can be avoided and concentrate on God’s presence.
Prayer: Jesus, discard any form of distraction hindering my prayer in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
15. Lack of Persistence
At times, we may give up too quickly. In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus shares the parable of the persistent widow, illustrating the significance of remaining steadfast in prayer, even when it appears that God is not responding. Prayer demands patience and perseverance. Read the similar post on this page.
